Students gathered at the Loftin Student Center Thursday to craft beaded bracelets as gifts to survivors of human trafficking.
The event was organized by Common Thread, a program under BCFS Health and Human Services, a San Antonio-based nonprofit that specializes in emergency shelter and care for victims of human trafficking.
“We’re gonna give back to our survivors and help them see that the community sees them — that they’re valued, they’re important, and that they have the support of everyone here,” Ema Avila, volunteer coordinator for Common Thread, said.
In 2024, 1,360 cases of human trafficking were identified in Texas by the National Human Trafficking Hotline. That accounts for 11.33% of all cases in the United States.

“It’s something we all need to be aware of, something we all need to be conscious of, to make sure that we make efforts to try and end it,” SAC student David Leon said.
Common Thread plans to host a volunteer art event March 17 at 4203 Woodcock Dr., Suite 110, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. And Avila said the organization plans to hold more events this spring.
