Armadillos Show Swagger in 110-60 Blowout Against Trinity

San Antonio College’s men’s Basketball team improved to 2-4 after defeating the Trinity Tigers 110-60 at SAC’s Candler Physical Education Center Wednesday.

The blowout win came in the second-to-last game of SAC’s regular season, giving the team some momentum as they prepare to close the fall season against the UIW Cardinals Wednesday night.

With almost half of his roster consisting of freshmen, Head Coach Jimmy Alcala knew that the bulk of their games would be focused on the development of new players.

“It’s a long season, so it’s a process,” Alcala said. “I tell the players, ‘Regardless of whether we win or lose, the main thing is (to) learn from this game so we can get ready for the next.’”

SAC Assistant Coach Johnny Weddington said he saw big improvements for the Armadillos in the win over Trinity.

“They’re beginning to buy into the offense and the defense,” Weddington said. “When the players buy in and execute, then they’re successful.”

The Armadillos put up 28 points before the Tigers were able to make their first bucket of the game. The Armadillos put their foot on the gas from the start and never looked back, ultimately winning by 50 points.

“We knew we were going to be physical,” SAC Center Edgar Gomez told the Sundial. “We wanted to start off hot to get the read on them, so we ran a full court press … and we got a lot of points out of it.”

Teamwork, coordination and chemistry were keys to victory.

“We play hard together, and we motivate each other,” said SAC Point Guard James Ngare. “The guys that are older than us — they’re pushing us to get better for the coming years.”

The Armadillos will try to build on their victory and close the fall season with a win over UIW at home Wednesday night. That would put them at 3-4 going into the second half of their regular season, which takes place in the spring semester.
