The Armadillos crushed the Trinity University Tigers, 111-60, with a fast-paced, dominant performance at SAC’s Candler Physical Education Center Wednesday night.
The Armadillos won the tip-off but failed to score on their opening possession. After the Tigers scored the first points of the game, SAC Forward Reggie Steadman got an easy transition score inside.
After a brief period with no scoring by either team, the Armadillos found their rhythm, pulling ahead 21-11 with an offensive run that featured multiple inbound heaves downcourt by SAC Guard Arian Elizondo.
As the Tigers started to cut the lead, SAC’s strong defense led to easy transition scoring for the Armadillos, who got a big lift from their bench as SAC Forward Jovan Jimenez went on an offensive tear. After driving the lane for a contested lay-in, Jimenez drained back-to-back threes to help grow SAC’s lead to 19.
“I found ways to get open off the ball,” Jimenez said. “Every time I saw the ball go in, it felt good.”
The Armadillos closed out the first half ahead, 58-32.
The Armadillos put the game well out of reach in the second half, adding another 25 points to their margin of victory in a performance that some SAC players likened to the low-stress environment of a pickup game.
“It’s fun. It brought back memories of playing as a kid,” Jimenez said.
The Armadillos are now 4-1 for the season and will look to build off the dominant win over Trinity and extend their win streak to four as they play the University of Incarnate Word Cardinals at home in the final game of the Texas Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season Nov. 6 at 8 p.m.
