San Antonio College’s Environmental Club hosted its first meeting March 19 at the college’s William R. Sinkin Eco Centro facility to inform students about the new club and future goals.

The club seeks to maintain a clean and thriving environment at SAC by promoting sustainability practices and community action such as the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle movement. Club leaders hopt to engage people of all ages with educational workshops and community-building activities.

“This is a team effort, and we want everyone to have a voice,” Environmental Club President Cory Fosheè told SAC Student News.

Fosheè, who majors in environmental science at SAC and works at Eco Centro, hopes children and families will join meetings and local events and volunteer with the club

“I want kids to get excited about caring for the planet,” she said. “They are our future.”

Eco Centro features a flourishing garden, a tranquil area for students, an integrated solar array, electric-vehicle-charging stations, a native-pollinator garden and other sustainability features.

Fosheè and the club serve the SAC community by giving fresh produce from Eco Centro’s garden to the Student Advocacy Center, providing insight on topics such as regenerative farming and assisting the community with river or litter cleanups.

Fosheè said she believes students involved in environmental conservation efforts will help hold SAC and local officials accountable.

The next Gardening Club meeting is scheduled for April 17 at Eco Centro, and the Environmental Club will meet for the second time next month.
