San Antonio College’s women’s basketball team defeated the UIW Cardinals 74-60 Wednesday at SAC’s Candler Physical Education Center, bringing their fall season record to 5-1.
The Armadillos’ defensive pressure set the tone, forcing turnovers and keeping the Cardinals on their heels throughout the night. SAC led by as many as 26 points.
SAC Center Nunu Johnson said ball movement and unselfish play were keys to success for the Armadillos.
“I feel like us playing together and actually moving the ball around made us be able to find what was open,” Johnson told the Sundial.
“I think it’s one of the best games we’ve had this semester,” SAC Coach Abel Castillo said after the game. “I’ve been preaching this whole semester that defense wins championships.”
It was a bittersweet night for guard Casie Guy, who played her final game with the Armadillos.
“She is one of our best defensive players,” Coach Castillo said, praising Guy before the game. “She gives it her all. She is one of the players you always want on your team.”
Guy said closing out her time with the Armadillos was surreal.
“It hasn’t really hit me yet, but it was kind of like ticking down as the time went down. I was like, ‘Wow. Like, this is it? It’s definitely sad.”
The Armadillos will resume play in the spring, looking to return the Texas Collegiate Athletic Conference championship in 2026. The Armadillos made it to the championship game last spring but fell to Northwest Vista College 75-74, falling just shy of securing a third consecutive championship for SAC.
