Students in costumes packed the SAC mall for the college’s Screamfest Halloween celebration and costume contest Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Student clubs sold food and drinks as DJ Spade played a mix of electronic dance music and pop hits.
“I know not everyone celebrates Halloween, but for those that do, it’s just another way to connect with students,” Director of Student Life Jacob-Aidan Martinez said. “It helps with their sense of belonging, and it’s something for them to have fun doing.”
Martinez said he and two other judges based their scoring on originality, creativity and whether the costume is funny or scary.
Drama student Angela Flores won first-place for her Beetlejuice costume.
“I just love Beetlejuice. I’ve loved it since the first movie came out,” Flores said. “I just embodied him, and having this red suit worked out perfectly.”
Nursing student Hector Sandoval took second place for his El Cadejo costume.
“There’s an old Mexican-American legend about the black and the white Cadejo,” Sandoval said. “One dog is determined to help lead the lost from forests at night while the other is determined to get them more lost. There are a lot of legends that say the white one was the good one and the black one was the bad one, but some say the opposite. So it depends on which dog you end up following at the end of the day.”
Business Administration student Joshua Hird, who dressed up as the Human Barbarian from Dungeons and Dragons, won third place.
Each winner received a Halloween swag bag with a Disney fanny pack, a Funko Pop toy, a deck of Halloween-inspired playing cards, and a Michael Meyers snow globe.
