Applications to run for office in SAC’s Student Government Association opened March 18, and students can apply until 5 p.m. Thursday.

The Student Government Association is a body of five elected student officers that “works to bridge the gap between the student, the faculty and the administrators,” according to SAC’s website. SGA members serve on campus-wide committees, sponsor events to inform students about the functions of administration offices, and represent students at Board of Trustees meetings.

The term of service for the 2024-2025 academic year runs from the fall 2024 semester through the spring 2025 semester, and four of the five officer positions are open.

The office of SGA president is not included in the application because only students who participate in the SGA’s associate officer program are eligible. Associate officers shadow sitting officers to gain experience and are eligible to run for SGA president the following academic term. Applications for associate officers will be open during the fall term.

Current SGA officers are President Desteny Espinoza, Vice President Michael Valdez, Secretary Jacob Pike, Historian Lisa Guerrero, Parliamentarian Gissel Jayasi, and Commissioner Brandon Aviado.

“Being in SGA I have the opportunity to see leaders from around the state, and … this has really shown me the type of leadership role I want to play in society,” current SGA Parliamentarian Gissel Jayasi told SAC Student News.

Jayasi said she encourages students to participate in the associate officer program to learn about SGA officers’ roles and responsibilities and “see behind the scenes what you would be going through and doing.”

To be eligible for service in the SGA, students must be enrolled in at least nine credit hours at SAC, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and cannot be subject to any disciplinary or administrative holds on their account.

Candidates should be responsible and dependable and have a desire to develop professionally, according to the SGA application. SGA members must attend a Student Leadership Retreat, a Summer Leadership Series and biweekly meetings with program advisors.

“Don’t be afraid once you join to use your position to work on some issues that mean something to you,” Current SGA Secretary Jacob Pike told SAC Student News recently.

Eligible candidates will begin campaigning April 3, and voting will take place April 15-17 on Alamo Experience. Election results will be announced April 18.

Questions or concerns related to the application process should be directed to SGA Advisor Domingo Figueroa at dfigueroa22@alamo.edu.
