The San Antonio College Office of Student Life hosted its annual Thanksgiving Student Luncheon Wednesday, offering a hot, festive meal to students in the Fiesta room on a first-come, first-served basis.

Officials said the free meal was meant to support students facing food insecurity, and to remind students of the importance of community and gratitude as the holiday season approaches.

“What I love about this event is that it provides a Thanksgiving for some of the students that may not be able to have Thanksgiving this year,” Lisa Garcia, senior specialist in the Office of Student Life, said. “It reminds them that we all have so much to be grateful for.”

The Office of Student Life is the central organization on campus that coordinates events and acts as a liaison for all student organizations, striving to enrich the student experience outside of the classroom.

“I like this because it’s like a Friendsgiving for people who come in here with their friends,“ Gary Reyes, a student studying biology and nursing, said. “Especially because people in college are young and don’t have the money to do stuff like this, so it’s a little festive thing to do together. We were starving when we saw this, and it was a perfect opportunity rather than getting tacos.”

The luncheon was intended to provide not just a meal, but a sense of belonging. Attendees could also watch a screening of “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.”

“As someone who’s been going through a lot this past year, this event means a lot to me,” Luna Carmona, a Radio-TV and Broadcasting student, said. “One of the reasons I came to SAC is because I love how much they offer to the community. I think it really helps people.”
