The Texas Veterans Commission recognized San Antonio College for its work supporting veteran students during a Veterans Day Ceremony at SAC’s Victory Center Monday.

The college received the Veteran Education Excellence Recognition Award, which recognizes higher education institutions that provide excellent education and support services for veterans. It is the fourth consecutive year that San Antonio College has received the award.

The ceremony began with a performance from a mariachi ensemble of local college students and veterans, who performed the official songs for the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force.

The Alamo College Police Department Honor Guard presented the American and Texas flags as the San Antonio College American Sign Language Glee club performed the National Anthem.

“Here at SAC, we are proud to serve over three thousand veterans yearly,” Interim SAC President Dr. Francisco Solis said at the ceremony. “We are here today to honor and thank them for their service.”

Solis acknowledged Texas State Senator Jose Menéndez, who was also in attendance, for his support of veterans at SAC, including his effort to fund and build the Victory Center, which allows military-affiliated students to get the proper assistance they need.

“Because of Jose Menéndez’s unmatched dedication and passion, we have this beautiful center that provides the best student services for all the student veterans in San Antonio,” Solis said.

Menéndez recognized the sacrifices that veterans make when they join the military.

“That one percent signs a blank check when they enlist,” Menéndez said. “That blank check means that they’ll give whatever it takes, up to and including the ultimate sacrifice.”

The ceremony concluded with Menéndez being honored by the campus with a plaque now enshrined near the main entrance of the Victory Center.

“This building has been such a role model for the rest of the state,” Menéndez said, referring to all the work done within the Victory Center.
