San Antonio College’s women’s basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a dominant 72-33 victory over Austin Community College Wednesday at the Candler Physical Education Center.

The win capped an undefeated semester and extended the Armadillos’ season record to 11-2, earning them the number 2 seed and a first-round bye going into the Texas Collegiate Athletic Conference (TCAC) playoffs. The Armadillos are two-time defending champions and will seek to achieve the rare feat of a three-peat.

The game began with a tribute to the Armadillos’ Devyn Castillo, a veteran player and offensive powerhouse who has averaged 27 points per game in her final season with the Armadillos. Coach Castillo said Devyn plans to continue her college basketball career at a Division 1 or Division 2 college. The team honored her with balloons and flowers at midcourt before the game, where Coach Castillo and Devyn shared words of appreciation.

“Coming into this program, I feel my team and I have helped change SAC basketball and create a name for it,” Devyn said after the game. “There are now more people wanting to join and more people wanting to come to the games. I’m glad we could go out with a bang. I’m happy I spent my two years here. I’m sad to leave, but time moves on. You just have to embrace what the past years have done for you.”

The Armadillos started strong with Devyn scoring the first seven points and continuing to contribute with points and blocked shots. By the end of the first quarter, SAC led 19-8. They dominated throughout, leading 37-12 at halftime. The win marked the team’s ninth consecutive victory.

“We left off on a high note, a nine-game winning streak, the highest winning streak of all the teams this year,” Coach Abel Castillo said. “It was pretty much a new team this year, and playing at this level while working together, it’s something special to watch.”

Devyn, who was a key player in bringing home a consecutive championship for SAC last year, said her team is confident going into the playoffs.
“One hundred percent, we’re bringing it home! The third time’s the charm. We are coming back with that trophy once again,” Devyn told the Sundial. “I hope we can still carry on a legacy here at SAC after I leave and after these girls leave, and it continues on to the fourth, fifth, and sixth-year championships.”

The Armadillos will play their first playoff game April 12 at Northeast Lakeview College. Their opponent will depend on who advances from the first round.
