SAC’s men’s basketball team opened its spring season with an 87-61 win over the Austin Community College Riverbats at SAC’s Candler Physical Education Center Wednesday.
After trailing to begin the game, the Armadillos rallied and put together 42 points and held the Riverbats to just 23 first half points.
The game stayed out of reach for ACC through the second half thanks in part to the Armadillo’s pressure defense and a steady stream of shots at the basket. The Armadillos’ bench made the most of their minutes as the team added 45 more points and secured the win.
SAC Forward Markus Seymour led scoring with 21 points. He also tallied 14 rebounds and five blocks.
SAC Forward Luke Lopez, a criminal justice major, added 13 points and three defensive boards. SAC pulled down 50 rebounds, turning 13 of them into second-chance points.
“I feel like we played a lot of team ball, we passed and made good shots.” Lopez told the Sundial after the game. “We’ve been practicing pressure game plans this week, and I feel it really paid off.”
Guard Dominic Guerra, a business administration major, said the game was “a great team win with good energy.”
“I like what we did today … I’m really excited,” SAC Head Coach Jimmy Alcala told his team after the game. “I know we can compete.”
The Armadillos will look to build on their win as they play in a tournament Sunday and Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe University. SAC will then travel to Northeast Lakeview College to take on the Nighthawks Wednesday, Feb. 11.
