Through developing fundamental basketball skills and accountability for his athletes to succeed on and off the court, San Antonio College’s men’s basketball Coach Jimmy Alcala hopes to start the basketball season off strong.

Coming off a championship run last year, Alcala feels good going into the next season.

“I don’t feel any added pressure. We have a pretty good system,” Alcala said.

He has been coaching for some time now. This will be his third season with SAC. He’s spent time coaching Our Lady of The Lake’s development team, and he worked at St. Philip’s College for seven years. His coaching philosophy is rooted in teaching fundamentals.

“We work on developing their skills and playing as a team,” Alcala said.

Alcala said his focus is on developing a fast-paced and aggressive team that is looking to put up a lot of points and play tough defense.

“We play a good, exciting game. I’m a big believer in playing tough aggressive defense,” Alcala said.

He is also focused on teaching his athletes off the court.

“I want to teach my athletes lessons in life — to be respectful, to be accountable,” Alcala said.

Alcala said teaching his athletes important life lessons is an important aspect of coaching that he enjoys.

“I enjoy working with college students, not only from basketball skills but also mentoring them. It allows me to use basketball as a platform to mentor young men,” Alcala said.

SAC’s men and women’s basketball teams had their first game of the season this week. The men’s basketball team won their first game against Quality Prep, 87-73, while the women won their first game against the Air Force women’s team, 66-65.

Coach Alcala said his team’s goal is to repeat as Champions this season.
