San Antonio College’s Student Government Association announced their new secretary and senators at their semimonthly meeting Wednesday.

Anel Flores-Ibarra is the new SGA secretary. Aidan Avalos, Ruben Rico and Alyssa Deleon were elected as SGA senators and serve under the current officers.

Previous Secretary Amith Varkey stepped down to Parliamentarian last month, leaving the secretary position open, which required a special election.

SGA senators support officers at meetings and events and gain experience and in student governance and mentorship from current officers. Senator applications are open to all students.

Secretary Anel Flores-Ibarra said she looks forward to making students more aware of what the organization is doing around campus. Her role includes preparing and maintaining SGA documents, such as meeting minutes and agendas.

“I want students to know what’s going on when they can’t attend meetings,” Flores-Ibarra said. “It’s important that students don’t feel separated from SGA and know they are part of a community.”

Flores-Ibarra is an international student, and she said she wants to uplift international student voices to make them realize they do not have to feel like outsiders.

“I want to set an example and make students see they are part of a community,” Flores-Ibarra said.

As the fall semester ends, Flores-Ibarra wants students to express their concerns so they can hit the ground running in the spring.

“We’ve been tabling outside and letting students know who we are and what we do,” Flores-Ibarra said. “I’ve talked to some international students and expressed that if they need any help, we are there for them.”

Instructional Technology Supervisor Yvonne Galindo from SAC’s Office of Technology Services surveyed those who attended the SGA meeting over Zoom to see what her office could do better to support students.

Galindo asked students what kinds of technology they would like to see, such as incorporating artificial intelligence into their learning.

“We have developed an AI training, focusing on faculty and staff right now,” Galindo said. “It’s in the pilot stage, but everything is going well. We want to take that same training and gear it toward students.”

Galindo said more information regarding AI training should be released in the spring.

The Student Government Association meets in room 113 in the Fletcher Administration Building every other Wednesday. For more information, contact sac-sga@alamo.edu.
