The Armadillos managed a close 82-78 victory against the Northwest Vista Wildcats Feb. 18 at SAC’s Candler Physical Education Center.
With two minutes left on the clock, the SAC men were down 72-75, but late in the game, they pulled it back, capitalizing on a key technical foul by the Wildcats. Dedication, aggression, and technique all played a part in SAC’s game plan over the course of the back-and-forth game.

“We had a lot of turnovers, a lot of fouls that didn’t go our way, but the boys stayed resilient,” Assistant Coach Rafael Martinez said.

The teams were neck-and-neck throughout the game, with the lead changing hands minute by minute. Fouls increased in the second half, and a disagreement between players broke out around the 14-minute mark. Men’s head coach Jimmy Alcala was absent for the game, with women’s head coach Abel Castillo stepping in to lead the team.

“He’s already prepared us for these types of situations,” SAC Forward Reginald “Jack” Stewart, a business and management major, told the Sundial. “I would just say more so surprised because he [Alcala] has always been there when it comes to our basketball games.”
The Armadillos seemed confident in their next game, as well. When asked about the upcoming match against St. Philip’s, SAC Point Guard and Shoot Guard Demetrice Mims said, “I feel good. We stay together, we’ll get the win.”

The Armadillos will jump back into action Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 8 p.m. against St. Philip’s College in the William Allen Hudgins Health and Wellness Center.
