San Antonio College’s women’s basketball team defeated the St. Philips Tigers Wednesday night 71-69 in overtime at St. Philip’s William Allen Hudgins Health and Wellness Building. SAC improves to 9-1 on the season in their first overtime game of the season.
SAC led the way and had a double-digit lead in the second half before the Tigers stormed back to take the lead late in the 4th quarter. The Armadillos trailed by four in the final minutes before rallying to send the game into overtime.

SAC trailed by two in the final minute of overtime, leading to SAC Guard Alexis Castillo being fouled and hitting two free throws to tie the game at 69.
With the game tied and hanging in the balance, SAC Point Guard Angel Carrisalez hit a clutch layup in the lane to give the Armadillos a two-point lead. There was one second on the clock, and SAC’s defense was able to hold off the Tigers for the victory.

Carrisalez was SAC’s leading scorer with 26 points. She has been one of the Armadillo’s most consistent players all season and talked about what it felt like to hit the game-winning shot.
“It feels good, I’m just glad I did not let the team down,” Carrisalez told the Sundial.

SAC Guard Alexis Castillo scored 11 points, including knocking down 3-point field goals to help space the floor for the Armadillos. “I saw they were playing off me, and I’m always going to take advantage of that because I’m always practicing my shooting,” Castillo told the Sundial.
She spoke about how they were able to keep their composure after losing the lead.
“We always stay calm, we never want to celebrate too early, we stay humble always, no matter how many wins we get. That is what keeps us calm.” Castillo told the Sundial.

Head Coach Abel Castillo reflected on his team’s performance and the victory against St Philips.
“They ended up making it a very good game. We ended up making a lot of little mistakes, and it caught up to us, but we were able to pull it off.” Castillo told the Sundial.
He discussed areas of improvement for his team and the need for being more disciplined. “There are a lot of things they don’t do that we practice,” Castillo said.
The Armadillos will return home to host the Palo Alto Palominos Mar. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Candler Physical Education Center.
