SAC’s men’s basketball team dominated the Trinity University Tigers 79-57 March 18 at Trinity’s William H. Bell Athletic Center, improving to 7-6. The Armadillos bounced back after losing to Palo Alto March 4.
SAC’s pressure defense and precise rotations flustered the Tigers, and the Armadillos converted many points off forced turnovers in transition. The Armadillos closed the first half 41-29.

Trinity opened up the second half in a zone defense, but SAC widened its lead, pulling away from Trinity and never looking back thanks to dominant play on both sides of the court. They led by as much as 26.
“That’s part of our game, working on pressing,” Head Coach Jimmy Alcala told the Sundial. “When we went to it, it shook them up. They started making mistakes. That is kind of why I wanted to put the pressure on them. That’s why we went to it.”

SAC Forward, Reginald “Jack” Stewart, led the Armadillos’ offense with 12 points. Stewart said communication was a key to SAC’s success.
“Being on the same page and having a press defense against a weaker team is better for us at the end of the day because it gets us more points on the board,” Stewart said.
SAC Point Guard Dominic Guerra and SAC Guard Javan Jimenez added 11 points each. The Armadillos now have their sights set on the playoffs.

(Janelle Alemán)“We just really came in together and focused on what the goal was, and it wasn’t to win this game, but going forward in the playoffs, we had to prepare for the next two weeks. That was the main goal,“ Guerra said.
SAC is now playoff bound in 3rd place overall at 7-6. Playoffs begin April 6, and SAC’s first playoff game will be April 8 at 7:30 at SAC’s Candler Physical Education Center. The Armadillos will play the winner of the first round matchup between the 6 and 7 seeds.
