Tri-Alpha, a national honor society that recognizes first-generation students with a 3.2 or higher GPA and notable achievements, held an induction ceremony for new members in the Loftin Student Center’s Fiesta Room April 8. It is the first honor society in the Alamo Colleges District dedicated to serving and representing first-generation students at San Antonio College.
“This brings a lot of recognition and support for our first-gen students, knowing that they are already breaking barriers and are trailblazers as the first in their families to attend college,” Desteny Espinoza, senior specialist at the Office of Student Life, said. “It allows them to feel proud and find a community where they feel represented.”

The Tri-Alpha Honor Society offers lifetime membership, providing ongoing support and mentoring for its members.
“I’m very honored to be inducted here,” Lisa Ybarra, a deaf support specialist major at San Antonio College. “We need to be out there to let others know, “Hey we’re here. You can be here too.”

Students are selected by invitation after completing 30 credit hours. Those interested in learning more about Tri-Alpha can contact Espinoza at [email protected].
