Hundreds of San Antonio College students and community members gathered to celebrate the college’s 17th annual Fredstock music festival Thursday in Parking Lot 13 in front of the Fletcher Administration Building.
Fredstock, an official Fiesta San Antonio event, is named after the late Radio-Television and Film professor Fred Weiss, who led SAC’s Music Business program for 20 years.
Organized by students in SAC’s Music Business, Fredstock provides hands-on experience in planning, producing and managing a live music event.

The festival featured six bands and myriad food trucks and vendors. Local bands Barrio Blasters, The Pain Junkies, Street Lamp, Massaro, and Rick Trevino performed at the Fiesta Event.
As bands played, the crowd danced vibrantly to the live music from some of San Antonio’s best.
Student organizations, including Sexuality and Gender Alliance, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Society of Physics Students, Texas Nursing Student Association, and Parents Achieving College Education (PACE), attended the festival to recruit new members.
“The goal is to give the students the experience of running a real festival,” Assistant Professor for Music Business Ruben Rodriguez told the Sundial. “It helps not only the music business program; it benefits the [Radio-TV-Film] program. We’re all partners. We work together.”

Students studying Radio-Television-Film or journalism documented the festival.
SAC President Dr. Francisco Solis acknowledged the festival sponsors: KYSM, Texas A&M-San Antonio, Alamo Music, Main Street Pizza, HEB, San Antonio Museum of Art, and Fiesta Commissions. Solis also acknowledged SAC’s Royal Court: Sovereign Rayshunda Dawson, Ambassador Salma Flores, Monarch Destiny Garcia, and Ambassador Josiah Rodriguez.
“I’m really blessed, and it’s a huge opportunity for me to be here, engaging with all the students, with all the families, and just enjoying Fredstock and Fiesta,” Flores told the Sundial.

Fiesta San Antonio Commission President Fern Bernie said Fredstock and other Fiesta events bring community members together for a common celebration and cause.
“We have over 75,000 people who volunteer their time to put on all of these Fiesta events,” Bernie told the Sundial. “We have almost 200 Fiesta events during these 11 days. We have over 100 participating member organizations. It is a community effort.”

Nursing student Kayla Rena attended Fredstock as a representative of the Texas Nursing Student Association.
“It’s really fun to be here and see the people that come from the community to support and listen to music and have a good time and meet up with friends and family,” Rena said.
Fredstock attracted a large crowd reaching its maximum RSVP capacity according to the EventBrite page. The fiesta event brought a mix of students and members of the broader San Antonio community together.
