San Antonio College’s women’s basketball team improved to 3-1 with a 71-56 victory over the St. Edward’s University Hilltoppers Wednesday night at SAC’s Candler Physical Education Center.
The opening tip-off went to the Hilltoppers, but strong defense by the Armadillos prevented the Hilltoppers from scoring for several possessions. SAC Forward Casie Guy drove the paint and hit a floater over the defense for the first points of the game.
The Armadillo’s defense was slow in transition in the first quarter, but their offense pushed the pace for perimeter kickouts and downhill passes. They ended the first quarter with a 17-13 lead after the Hilltoppers hit a last-second mid-range jump shot.
The Armadillos saw their offense cool off in the second quarter, missing open shots from the perimeter and the post and struggling to get defensive rebounds. They compensated by speeding up their transition defense and grabbing multiple steals. The Armadillos put up 10 points in the quarter and ended the half up 27-25.
“We’ve got to be more disciplined and focused,” SAC Head Coach Abel Castillo told his team.
The Armadillos opened up the third quarter with a full-court press. The pressure led to several Armadillo steals, and the Hilltoppers struggled with shot-clock violations. The Armadillos capitalized and mounted a scoring run that put the Armadillos ahead 50-39 at the end of the third quarter.
The Armadillos kept the pressure on in the fourth quarter, forcing turnovers by the Hilltoppers and earning more points off of steals. SAC continued to get good looks inside the paint and shot well from the perimeter, running away with a 71-56 win.
Coach Castillo said he hopes to keep the Armadillos’ winning streak going.
“We have to stay positive and make sure we are disciplined,” he said.
The Armadillos will face the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals at home Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.
