Dozens of students and staff members gathered outside the Victory Center Thursday morning to plant flags of honor for service members and veterans in a Heroes Memorial Garden for the first of the college’s Veterans Day observances.
Participants wrote names of those they wish to honor on small red, white and blue flags and planted them inside a perimeter of American flags that stood as a symbol of protection and reverence for the fallen, those still serving and veterans.
Red flags are for the fallen. White flags are for those serving on active duty. And blue flags are for veterans.
“To our student veterans and service members, San Antonio College is proud to have you among our student body, and I’m proud that San Antonio college represents the largest number of veterans in all of the Alamo Colleges,” SAC Interim President Dr. Francisco Solis said at the ceremony.
SAC Director of Veteran Affairs Timothy Pair also made an address at the ceremony, thanking the Victory Center staff, which specializes in supporting the needs of student veterans and their dependents to maximize their academic success at SAC.
“Veterans Day is a federal holiday recognized [November 11] to celebrate and honor all United States veterans — deceased and living,” Pair said.
The Victory Center will host a Veterans Day ceremony Monday at 1 p.m. in the Victory Center Valor Rooms.
