San Antonio College’s men’s basketball team trounced Austin Community College 98-67 at home Wednesday night, closing out the regular season on a high note and earning a first-round bye going into the Texas Collegiate Athletic Conference (TCAC) playoffs.

The Armadillos are defending TCAC champions and will look to repeat in this year’s tournament.

SAC started off slow, trading baskets with ACC early on before finding their rhythm and pulling away.

“We started off kind of slow, but then we found our pace and picked it up throughout the game,” SAC Guard Arian Elizondo told the Sundial

SAC Head Coach Jimmy Alcala said speed in transition, defense and perimeter shooting were the Armadillos’ keys to victory.

“Our game has always been to dribble, drive in, and get the ball inside,” Alcala said. “Tonight, our three-pointers were the ones that made the difference.”

SAC Guard Demetrice Mims led the Armadillos offense, hitting eight threes and finishing with 31 points.

“I started off slow too, but I hit a couple threes and started feeling it,” Mims told the Sundial.

SAC Center Markus Salinas, who Alcala said averages a double-double in points and rebounds per game, missed the game with an ankle injury.

“I don’t know if he’s going to be ready for the playoffs, but we missed him tonight,” Alcala said.

The Armadillos are the number 2 seed going into the playoffs and will play in the semifinal against a to-be-determined opponent at 5 p.m. April 12 at St. Philip’s College.

“We’re feeling confident,” Mims told the Sundial. “As long as we stay consistent and stay together, we will get the repeat this year.”
