San Antonio College students and staff participated in the first of three Fungi For a Greener Future workshops at Eco Centro March 27.

Eco Centro Agriculture Coordinator Quinton Rowland led the workshop with a presentation covering fungal evolution, anatomy, reproduction, ecological roles, environmental challenges, fungal networks, waste management, carbon sequestration and conservation practices.

Rowland provided oyster mushrooms for audience members to examine and taught attendees basic fungal functions and potential environmental applications.

A mushroom cultivation business owner, Rowland began his agriculture career in Lockhart, Texas. When he and his business partner struggled to grow crops during summer, they searched for a product to boost income and land use.

“As a farmer, your whole purpose is to leave the system better than you found it,” Rowland said.

The next Fungi For a Greener Future workshop is scheduled for June 5 at Eco Centro.
