San Antonio FC’s nine-game unbeaten streak was snapped on the road in Lexington, Ky., Saturday night after losing 2-0 to Lexington SC.
The first half of the match was uneventful. Lexington SC featured a high press and had a handful of shots on goal, but never posed any real scoring threat. SAFC managed to keep the Lexington attack at bay and looked to create more chances in the second half.

“We got punched in the mouth and took our medicine, unfortunately. We didn’t play how we wanted to play or how we’ve been playing all year,” SAFC defender Akeem O’Connor-Ward said.
Lexington SC broke the deadlock in the 48th minute when Lexington midfielder Blaine Ferri found himself in the right place at the right time, got behind the SAFC defense and headed in deftly placed service by forward Marcus Epps for a one-nil Lexington lead.

In the 68th minute, Lexington SC midfielder Braudílio Rodrigues torched through the weak side of the SAFC defense and buried a low cross from defender Xavier Zengue on the first touch, giving Lexington the insurance goal and ultimately the 2-0 win.
“We were flat. That’s a reflection of the result. We have to give credit to Lexington as well. They did what they had to do, took advantage of our mistakes, our holes and they won the game,” SAFC head coach Carlos Llamosa said.

A win would have given SAFC a commanding five-point lead in the Western Conference standings. Instead, the loss at Lexington on Saturday left SAFC with a slim, one-point lead atop the table in the west. San Antonio FC will play one more match on the road before returning home to Toyota Field, when it faces Colorado Switchbacks FC at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, at Weidner Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colo.
