Dozens of SAC students observed National Coming Out Day Oct. 10 in the SAC Mall area with a vendor fair sponsored by the Office of Student Life and the Gender and Sexuality Alliance.
National Coming Out Day is regularly observed Oct. 11 to support any LGBTQ+ individuals who are coming out of the closet, but the OSL and GSA held SAC’s observance Oct. 10 to kick off the college’s LGBTQ+ History Month celebrations.
SAC observes LGBTQ+ History Month with several “Rainbow Heritage” celebrations.
“We were suppressed in our personalities and our identities for so long that it is good to make an effort and a stand,” GSA officer Bridgette Phillips told The Sundial.
Phillips painted a closet door for queer students to add their coming out stories.
Biology student Mia Ceballos attended the event, flying a Bisexual Flag and celebrating her queer identity.
“Today is about loving who I want to love, without any shame,” Ceballos told The Sundial.
The GSA seeks to provide a safe, inclusive community on campus for all students by offering resources to marginalized communities and promoting acceptance and awareness of LGBTQ issues, according to its organizational web page.
