The San Antonio College Men Empowerment Network (SACMEN) hit the ground running for the fall 2024 semester celebrating 10 years and expanding membership by inspiring men to reach their full potential.
“We’re going to be celebrating 10 years of SACMEN as an organization,” Academic Coordinator Geraldo Guerra said. “We’re working with our [Office of Marketing & Strategic Communications] at the college to do several different things that celebrate the 10 years the organization has been around.”
Guerra said they are planning an event in December to feature former members and students to share their stories and careers. While there are no details yet, the event will be open to the public.
Academic Success Initiative Coordinator, Matthew Gomez, who graduated from SAC in 2019, said Guerra changed his life and outlook on education.
“I’m not just going to be locked up in my office all day,” Gomez said. “I’m going to be out there in the front line, in the trenches with our students to make sure that they transfer, they graduate. Whatever it is they want to do academically, I’m going to make sure I help them out.”
SACMEN has a credit recovery program that was launched in the summer to help students get back on track with late assignments for classes for up to 120 days. The school will continue the program through the fall.
“Going into higher education, I’m exposed to all these good opportunities and good people that help out with the community and student success,” SACMEN President Nathan Sauceda said.

Early Alert is a program that allows faculty to send at-risk students an alert, which SACMEN receives then they reach out to the student to offer resources such as tutoring, counseling, and more to help academically and personally.
“I think [SACMEN] is a great opportunity to help out with students to help get them out of their shell,” Sauceda said. “Offer a place of vulnerability, a place of exposure so they can also maybe go to high schools or middle schools and give out their way of how SACMEN has helped them out in college.”
Outside of helping students at this college, they partner with Community in Schools, which provides tutoring and mentorship to students at San Antonio ISD schools.
“I didn’t know what to expect of college, and I was coming the first semester just expecting it to be like high school, going through the motions. I didn’t feel a passion,” SACMEN Vice President Jayden Correa said. “One of my buddies invited me over. He got me signed up at SACMEN, and it just did a complete 180 for my college experience.”
“It’s not normal for men to be so welcoming and talk about our feelings with each other,” Correa said. “Everyone was so open, and I’m not used to that. So it was an amazing experience not only to get to experience but also bring in new SACMEN members.”
SACMEN is located at Room 707M in the Moody Learning Center. For more information, contact Geraldo Guerra at 210-486-0075 or gguerra@alamo.edu.
